Laminated Root Rot--Phellinus
weirii
Signs/Symptoms
- Numerous small cones, thinning crown
- Infected tree with
circle of declining trees-spreads by root contact
- Below
bark at collar--red brown streaks in wood, and wood separates
in sheets at rings
- Crescent-shaped brown mark if cut crosswise
- Red hairs
of mycelium w/ a hand lens
General
- Tree dies from root failure
- Affects Doug Fir and Hemlock
(when with Doug Fir of same age)
- Can stay dormant in roots
for 50 yrs.
Control
- Excavate around tree to identify
- Remove trees within
50 ft of infected tree or trench around tree
- Plant resistant
species ie. hardwoods
Brown Cubical Butt Rot, Velvet top
fungus--Paolus schweinitzii
Signs/Symptoms etc
- Brown-velvet top fungus w/ yellow rim, large
- Causes structural
failure up to 3 meters up trunk and can cause rapid tree
failure
- Swelling at base of trunk
- Usually affects single trees
not groups.
- Infection by spores through trunk and root
wounds.
Phytopthora lateralis
Signs/Symptoms etc
- Inner bark goes pink to light cream to cinnamon brown
- No
fruiting bodies
- Tree goes green to yellow to dead
General
- Affects Port Orford Cedar which dies in 2-4 yrs
- Enters
non-woody roots, wounds, and foliage
- Spreads by spores
through soil, splashing, and running water
- Urban soils
don't have natural microbes to suppress
Control
- Improve drainage
- Increase natural microbes.
