Fruit Suitable for Colorado
| Apple |
Fireblight resistant varieties would
be recommended first. Others worthy of consideration
are Red and Golden Delicious, Gala, Goldrush, Jonathan
and Rome Beauty (cooking). |
| Peach |
There are two types of peach- free stone,
and cling- depending on whether the flesh separates from
the pit or not. Cling types are most often used for processing.
Elberta, Envoy, the Haven series, Polly, Reliance and
Redskin are suggestions to try in Colorado. |
| Plum |
There are three main types of plum- Japanese,
European, and American. They may be free stone or cling.
Japanese are the least cold hardy and flower early. Their
blooms are often frost damaged. European plums are of
a higher quality than Native American plums, which are
useful for preserves. European plums are most recommended
for Colorado growers. Suggestions include Stanley, Green
Gage, Blue Damson, Waneta, President, and Sapalta. |
| Cherries |
There are two main types- tart or sour
cherries, and sweet cherries. Tart cherries are the most
dependable for Colorado. Sweet cherries are not as winter
hardy. Tart varieties for Colorado include Montmorency,
Meteor, and North Star. Sweet cherries include Bing,
Van, Early Richmond, Black Tartarian, and Kansas Sweet.
Stella is a winter hardy, self-pollinating sweet cherry. |
| Pear |
Fire blight has made pear growing risky
business. However, the European (common) pear can be
grown. Bartlett, Kieffer, Maxine, Moonglo, and Anjou
are suggestions. |
