Deer Resistant Plants
The following is a list of perennials, which seem to have
strong deer resistance.
Migrating deer tend to sample plants and move on so it seems impossible to "educate" them
with distasteful plants but if you have a local herd living near your yard
here are a few plants worthy of a try.
Family – Mint: Siberian Catnip, English Lavender,
Sage, Thyme, Oregano, Ajuga, Lamb's Ears, Bee Balm, Teucrium
and Yellow Archangel are members of the same family that
deer almost never eat.
Family – Pinks: Snow-in-summer; Clove Pink; Sweet
William; Cheddar Pink; Cottage Pink; Maiden Pink; Crown-Pink
including Catchfly, Maltese Cross and Rose Campion; Bouncing-Bet
and Tumbling Ted and Indian Pink. Other members of this family
are Baby's Breath and Irish and Scotch Moss.
The following list contains additional trees, shrubs and
perennials which are eaten less often.
Incense Cedar, Pine, Spruce, Fir, Manzanita, Barberry, Cotoneaster,
Oregon Grape, Potentilla, Sumac, Currant, Lilac, Viburnum.
-and- Vinca, Yarrow, Astilbe, Sagebrush,Campanula, Jupiter's
Beard, Coreopsis, Bleeding Heart, Foxglove, Ferns, Candytuft,
Red-Hot-Poker, Monkey Flower, Daffodil, Penstemon, Santolina,Veronica,
Zauschneria.
Any plants with aromatic or silvery foliage are good plants
to try for deer resistance.
